Turmeric Ginger Milk

This helped my brother and me feel so much better when we were sick. Both my grannies would make us a strong cup of ginger milk. I think I liked it because of the sweetness, but also because it was warm and soothed my throat, making me feel so much better.

This was more than two decades ago, and yet now many people have their own versions of ginger milk in the form of a golden latte or special anti-inflammatory milk.

The reason my grannies made this is because of the healing properties of ginger and honey. Ginger has antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds, while honey is rich in antibacterial and antiviral properties.

The combination of warm milk, ginger, and honey can soothe a sore throat, reduce coughing, and provide relief from cold and flu symptoms. Ginger helps clear congestion, while honey acts as a natural cough suppressant. Warm milk has been traditionally used to promote better sleep due to its tryptophan content, which can help induce sleep. This is why, after having a cup of ginger milk, we were ready to sleep, and when we woke up, we felt so much better.

INGREDIENTS

SERVES 2-3

  • 250 ml water
  • 500 ml milk
  • 40 g grated ginger
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric
  • 2 tablespoons honey

METHOD

  1. In a saucepan, pour 500 ml of water and add the freshly grated ginger. Bring it to a gentle simmer. By doing this step you will prevent the milk from splitting.
  2. Sprinkle one teaspoon of turmeric into the water mixture and stir well to combine the flavors.
  3. Once the water begins to simmer, drop in a cinnamon stick and slowly pour in the milk.
  4. Allow the turmeric-ginger milk mixture to come to a boil for a few minutes, ensuring all the ingredients blend harmoniously.
  5. Finally, add 2 tablespoons of honey to sweeten the golden milk. Stir until the honey is fully dissolved.
  6. Serve the golden milk latte hot and enjoy its warm, earthy, and homey taste.
