Soft Roti – Step By Step Guide

Here is a step by step beginners guide to making soft roti’s. The beginner’s guide I wish I had when I first started making Roti.

Undoubtedly, one of the most challenging things to make is roti. Getting through the dough is a breeze, but then there’s the kneading, rolling, and of course, cooking the roti.

Sometimes it feels easier to just buy a dozen. But the truth about roti is that you can never beat homemade roti. After many failed attempts at perfecting the dough and still ending up with hard roti, I think I can share a few tips that I wish I knew earlier and these tips will certainly help with making soft fluffy roti’s.

INGREDIENTS

(Makes 8 Roti’s)

  • 2 cups Cake Flour
  • 2 tablespoons Vegetable Oil
  • 1 teaspoon Melted Butter/Margarine
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 cup Boiling Water

METHOD

  1. Prepare the Dough:
    • In a bowl, combine the cake flour, vegetable oil, melted butter, and salt. Mix until fine bread crumbs form.
    • Pour in the boiling water and mix until the dough starts to come together. Use a wooden spoon before going in with your hands.
  2. Knead the Dough:
    • Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead it for 5 minutes until smooth.
  3. Rest the Dough:
    • Shape the dough into a ball and place it in a dry bowl. Cover it with a damp kitchen towel and let it rest for at least 30 minutes.
  4. Form the Roti:
    • After resting, divide the dough into 8 equal pieces.
    • Roll each piece into a ball, then flatten them to form discs.
    • Dust each disc with cake flour and roll them into slightly larger circles using a floured rolling pin. Alternatively, use a side plate to cut out circles if needed.
  5. Cook the Roti:
    • Heat a tava or flat non-stick pan over medium to high heat.
    • Lightly brush the pan with vegetable oil and place a roti onto it.
    • Cook for about 20 seconds on each side or until small bubbles start to form.
    • Flip the roti and cook for another 20 seconds, then flip again for a final 15 seconds.
  6. Serve or Store:
    • Once cooked, transfer the roti into an airtight container or wrap them in a kitchen towel to keep them warm until serving.
