Sweet Rice Recipe

Sweet Rice For Prayers

Sweet rice is like a cozy rice pudding with delightful hints of cinnamon and cardamom. It’s a heartfelt dish often made as an offering during prayers. It is such a humble dish and its really very easy to make.

This recipe is my personal take on sweet rice, aiming for a wonderfully rich and creamy texture. Every family has its unique way of preparing this, and mine is a blend of my grandmothers’ styles.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup white rice
  • 4.5 tablespoons sugar
  • 100 ml cream (optional)
  • 70g Rama
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 cardamom pod
  • 4 cups milk

METHOD

  1. Begin by washing the rice a few times, then soak it overnight in water.
  2. The next day, add the soaked rice to two cups of water in a pot. Bring it to a boil while adding the cardamom pod and cinnamon stick.
  3. As the water starts to evaporate, you’ll notice the rice thickening. Gradually add small amounts of water as needed until the rice is fully cooked and takes on a slightly thick consistency.
  4. Now, introduce 2 cups of milk to the rice, allowing it to thicken to a porridge-like consistency. Add in the ground cardamom and stir in.
  5. While the rice continues to thicken, pour in another cup of milk gradually. Give it an occasional stir.
  6. Time to infuse more flavors! Stir in the Rama, sugar, and cream for extra richness. Also, include the final cup of milk. If you prefer a thicker texture, you can opt to add half a cup of milk.
  7. Let your sweet rice simmer until it reaches your preferred thickness, and then it’s ready to be served.

Tips:

  • Remember to wash and soak the white rice—it helps speed up the cooking process.
  • Adjust the sugar amount according to your sweet tooth’s preference.
  • While cream isn’t traditional, it can add a luxurious touch to your sweet rice.
  • Even if your sweet rice seems runny while warm, it will thicken as it cools down.
  • Get creative! You can skip the sugar and use condensed milk instead.
  • For an extra crunch, top your sweet rice with cocoa nibs or almond slices.

This recipe brings together the comforting essence of sweet rice, with a hint of nostalgia and a dash of creativity. It’s about blending tradition with your unique touch, just like I do in my kitchen. Enjoy the journey of making this heartwarming dish, and may it fill your home with delightful aromas and blessings!
